Lovely Lago d’Iseo

We left Greece and flew to Milan on discount airline RyanAir. We couldn’t pass on the $15 flight direct from Corfu (though we had to pay $20 for our carry-on bags). 25 years ago we spent 3 wonderful nights north of Milan at Lake Como in the town of Bellagio and fell in love with the area. So we thought we would try another one of the large lakes nestled in Lombardy at the foothills of the Alps. We picked Lago d’Iseo (Lake Iseo) and we weren’t disappointed.

Arriving by ferry to Peschiera Maraglio.

Lago d’Iseo is a huge lake, stretching 16 miles, surrounded by rolling hills and it contains the large island of Monte Isola which rises nearly 2000 feet from the lake bed. Like Lake Como the shores are dotted with quaint towns connected by regular ferry service. We stayed in the town of Iseo but also took the ferry to Monte Isola and and spent a great day touring the towns of Peschiera Maraglio and Sensole.

In the town of Sensole there was a cat rescue shelter with these kitty hotels.

There are lots of graceful swans trolling the waters of Lake Iseo.

On the walk to Sensole we passed under arbors full of grapes.

Bread, cheese, prosciutto, wine and a lovely date.

We loved the scenery, we loved the food, and we loved the surrounding area. Since Milan is a good hub to fly in and out of we hope to get back to this area and perhaps visit Lago de Maggiore to continue our exploration of the Lombardy region of Italy.
